Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and Member of the Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement in advance of President Donald J. Trump's visit to Michigan:

'NAFTA was a disaster for the people I represent, and I was happy to support the President's decision to renegotiate bad trade deals. But the original U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement put forward by the Trump Administration left Michigan workers vulnerable to more pink slips, plant closures and jobs being outsourced to Mexico. Under the leadership of Speaker Pelosi and Chairman Neal, House Democrats rewrote a better USMCA to include the strongest enforcement mechanisms of any U.S. trade agreement ever. Democrats also removed the Trump Administration's giveaway to pharmaceutical companies. The USMCA is far from perfect, but compared to the status quo, it presents an opportunity to improve the lives of American workers by replacing NAFTA.

'The President has failed to live up to his campaign promises. As a candidate, Trump came to Michigan and promised that not one auto plant would close. But years later, multiple car plants have been shuttered across the Midwest and thousands of auto workers have been laid off. The President also promised quality health care for everyone, but his administration is fighting in court to repeal the Affordable Care Act and slash protection for pre-existing conditions. And just recently, the President suggested he was open to cutting Social Security and Medicare. Michiganders know that words are cheap and that the President has not lived up to the promises he made.'
