The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Road and Rail Transport Statistics, containing statistics for July to September 2013, is now available

The publication is produced by the Central Statistics and Research Branch (CSRB) of the Department for Regional Development and contains information on use of public transport and deliveries of petrol and diesel for use in Northern Ireland. The publication is available on the CSRB website

Key points

The key points for the July to September 2013 quarter are:

  • There was a weekly average of 1.01 million public bus passenger journeys made during the July to September 2013 quarter, an increase of 2% from 0.99 million in the corresponding quarter of 2012. During the same time period, weekly average bus passenger receipts increased by 5% from £1.86 million to £1.96 million.
  • The weekly average rail passenger journeys in July to September 2013 increased by 19% from 0.21 million to 0.25 million compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012. During the same time period, weekly average rail passenger receipts increased by 21% from £0.67 million to £0.81 million.
  • Compared to the same quarter 5 years ago, average weekly bus passenger journeys have decreased by 4% ( from 1.05 million in July-September 2008 to 1.01 million in July-September 2013). Whereas, over the same time period, average weekly rail passenger journeys have increased by 32% (from 0.19 million in July-September 2008 to 0.25 million in July-September 2013).
  • From July to September 2013, 180,783 tonnes of petrol and diesel were delivered for use in Northern Ireland, with diesel accounting for 63% of all petroleum deliveries.
