St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 5, 2018) - A leak of about 500 gallons of partially-treated sludge (a by-product of the wastewater-treatment process) leaked from a holding tank after a brief power outage caused by core-drilling to install a new sensor at the Northeast Water Reclamation Facility (NEWRF) at 1160 62 Avenue NE.
The unauthorized discharge - discovered around 3:30 pm Thursday (1/4/2018) and stopped by 3:45 p.m. - was contained in the soil near the tank, on-site at the NEWRF property. Most of the sludge (approximately 450 gallons) was vacuumed up - along with some of the saturated soil.
There was no evidence of any of the discharge leaving the property at NEWRF nor did any of the sludge or affected soils convey to nearby waterways.
