Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor’s Story, written by Caren Stelson and published by Carolrhoda Books, a division of Lerner Publishing Group, has been named a 2017 Robert F. Sibert Informational Honor Book. The Sibert Medal was named in honor of Robert F. Sibert, the long-time president of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational picture book for children published in the United States, with Honor Books named each year as well. The ALA awards were announced this morning at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta.

A National Book Award for Young People Longlist selection, Sachiko is a striking work of narrative nonfiction that tells the true story of six-year-old Sachiko Yasui's survival of the Nagasaki atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, and the heartbreaking and lifelong aftermath. Having conducted extensive interviews with Sachiko Yasui, author Caren Stelson chronicles Sachiko’s trauma and loss, as well as her long journey to find peace. This book offers readers a remarkable new perspective on the final moments of World War II and their aftermath.
