STORY: Donald Sutherland, one of Canada's most versatile and gifted actors, died on Thursday at the age of 88.

His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, made the announcement on social media.

Sutherland began his career in the 1960s, going on to captivate audiences across several generations.

He's most well-known for playing a wide range of memorable characters.

They include army surgeon Hawkeye Pierce in "M*A*S*H," Sergeant Oddball in "Kelly's Heroes," and most recently, President Snow in the Hunger Games series.

Other notable on-screen credits include "Klute," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," and "Pride and Prejudice."

The actor was born in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and raised in Nova Scotia.

His big break came in 1967 when he joined the ensemble cast for the war film, "The Dirty Dozen."

Three years later, he rose to fame for his role in "M*A*S*H."

Sutherland received an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 2017...

though he was considered among the best actors to never receive an Academy Award nomination for any of his roles.

Sutherland was married three times and had five children.
