January 5, 2018 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is conducting federal environmental assessments for the proposed Flemish Pass Exploration Drilling Project and the proposed Eastern Newfoundland Offshore Exploration Drilling Project, located 480 kilometres and 250 kilometres, respectively, east of John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Agency invites the public and Indigenous groups to comment on the potential environmental effects and the proposed measures to prevent or mitigate those effects as described in the summary of the Environmental Impact Statement () for the Flemish Pass Exploration Drilling Project and the summary of the for the Eastern Newfoundland Offshore Exploration Drilling Project. The documents were submitted by the proponents Statoil Canada and ExxonMobil Canada , respectively. Comments submitted will be considered for both projects, as applicable.

Table 1.1, located in Chapter 1 of each Environmental Impact Statement, identifies similarities and differences between the two s and may assist reviewers.

All comments received will be considered public. Written comments in either official language must be submitted by February 12, 2018 to:

Statoil Canada (Statoil) is proposing to conduct an exploration drilling project within offshore exploration licenses located in the Flemish Pass Basin, approximately 480 kilometres east of John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The proposed Flemish Pass Exploration Drilling Project would take place over a 10-year period, commencing in 2018 and would allow Statoil to determine the presence, nature and quantities of the potential hydrocarbon resource in exploration licences 1139, 1140, 1141, and 1142.

ExxonMobil Canada (ExxonMobil) is proposing to conduct an exploration drilling project within offshore exploration licenses located in the Jeanne d'ArcBasin and the Flemish Pass Basin, approximately 250 kilometres east of John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The proposed Eastern Newfoundland Offshore Exploration Drilling Project would take place over a 12-year period, commencing in 2018 and would allow ExxonMobil to determine the presence, nature and quantities of the potential hydrocarbon resource in exploration licences 1135 and 1137.
