A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Puerto Rico early on January 13, 2014. The epicenter of the earthquake was 17.7 miles below the seabed, approximately 35 miles north of Hatillo, Puerto Rico and approximately 65 miles northwest of San Juan. As the earthquake occurred offshore, those exposed to the event reported weak to moderate shaking based on the Modified Mercalli (MM) Intensity scale, which measures perceived shaking, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents in San Juan reported light shaking.

While local media outlets have not reported significant damage to structures or property, A.M. Best Co. is monitoring insurance carriers' potential exposure to losses as a result of this event. While it is still early, companies do not anticipate significant losses.
