BGE Baltimore Gas and Electric : Fuel Cell Reduces CO2 Emissions by 3 Million Pounds In One Year

BALTIMORE (Jan. 25, 2017) - During its inaugural year of operation, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company's (BGE) Bloom Energy Server produced more than 2,000 megawatt hours (mWh) of electricity, reducing the production of carbon dioxide by nearly 3,000,000 pounds.

The Bloom Energy Server provides approximately half the energy needs of the company's Lord Baltimore Building in Windsor Mill, Md. Its fuel cell technology converts natural gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process rather than combustion, reducing carbon emissions and eliminating smog forming air pollutants, like nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. The installation of the unit demonstrates the company's commitment to finding and using reliable and cost effective clean energy sources whenever possible.

The natural gas powered unit went into operation on Dec. 31, 2015 and ran at full capacity for 353 days in 2016 year. The unit reduced the production of nitrogen oxide by 18,000 pounds and sulfur oxides by 28,000 pounds. The CO2 avoided was the equivalent of taking 281 cars off the road for a full year.

In addition to the Bloom Energy Server, BGE also powers its operations with two solar arrays, a 155 kW unit that provides electricity to its Spring Gardens location in south Baltimore and a 170 kW unit at its White Marsh Training Center.
