In 2016 the supply of ships calling the port of Lisbon for bunkers only has grown substantially when compared to 2015 the number of ship grew 44,8% and the fuel volume supplied increased around 88,6% - representing nearly 100 000 tons. This effect was the result of the work that has been developed by the Port Community of Lisbon and several service companies, to position Port of Lisbon as more competitive and attractive in this segment, namely the Port Authority, and the fuel supplier company GALP.
The economic benefit of this activity is attractive in itself, it also brings added benefits in the form of other shipping related service such as provisions, water supplies and crew changes, among others.
In the Atlantic region until 2014 the main preference of ship owners concerning bunkers only ports were ports of the Canarias Islands, Gibraltar Straits and Falmouth in the UK. This has now changed. According to GALP 'we believe that there is still a lot of room to grow' in the Port of Lisbon.
Today Port of Lisbon wants to be a reference in this segment and is very keen continue to develop this activity and to make Lisbon a leading port and location for bunkers only calls in accordance with the international regulations of safety and environment.
