Profile
Prior to joining Finacorp Securities, Mr. Merkel was a senior investment analyst at Hovde Capital, responsible for analysis and valuation of investment opportunities for the FIP funds, particularly of companies in the insurance industry.
He also managed the internal profit sharing and charitable endowment monies of the firm.
Prior to joining Hovde in 2003, Mr. Merkel managed corporate bonds for Dwight Asset Management, after leading the Mount Washington Investment Group through its merger with Dwight in 2001.
In 1998, he joined the Mount Washington Investment Group as the Mortgage Bond and Asset Liability manager.
As an investment actuary, he worked for Provident Mutual, AIG and Pacific Standard Life.
Mr. Merkel has been a long time leading contributor to RealMoney.com, after being invited by Jim Cramer to write there.
He is also author and owner of the popular finance weblog Alephblog.com.
Mr. Merkel has a BA and MA in Political Economy from The Johns Hopkins University, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst as well as a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries.
