The firm takes a top-down, macro approach, providing portfolio construction for the client and hiring third-party managers to construct asset portfolios in line with Wilshire’s broad investment mandate.

Principal Management Corp. (PMC) serves as a sub-advisor to Principal Life Insurance Co. (“PLIC”) unregistered separate accounts that are custom target-date separate account series for Community Health Systems, Inc. (“CHS”) and Sanford Health retirement customers of PLIC. The two custom target date series, called the CHS Target Date Separate Account Series and the Sanford Target Date Separate Account Series, invest in Principal Funds and unregistered separate accounts of PLIC. PLIC hired PMC to be the sub-advisor for the two custom target-date PLIC separate account series. For the CHS and Sanford Target Date Separate Accounts, PMC develops and monitors each series’ strategic or long-term asset class targets and target ranges. PMC is also responsible for providing an active rebalancing strategy for each series designed to identify asset classes that appear attractive over the short-term and sets the percentage of each series’ assets to be allocated to a particular asset class. PMC selects the underlying funds or PLIC separate accounts for each asset class and the target weights for each underlying investment option. Eligible investment options for the CHS and Sanford Target Date Separate Account Series include PLIC unregistered separate accounts (separate accounts that do not invest in shares of Principal Funds) and Principal Funds.

Principal AM has divided their investment management operations into several unique boutiques. The equities boutiques render advice primarily for equity securities. They utilize internally generated fundamental research that focuses on bottom-up stock selection within a sophisticated comparative framework. The fixed income boutique renders advice primarily for debt securities. Their currency boutiques render advice for active and passive currency. Applying a fundamental-discretionary, macroeconomic theme-based investment approach to portfolio management, the strategies include absolute return as well as base currency hedging strategies.
