Scotsman Capital Management LLC
Scotsman Capital Management LLC Investment ManagersFinance SCM's statistical cheapness subset includes stocks that appear inexpensive by one or more conventional measures, such as p/e, price-to-sales and price-to-book value. Statistical cheapness is identified by comparing a stock's current valuation to the market's, its peer group, or its own trading history. As a rule, they buy stocks when they are in the lower quartile of the pertinent statistical range, and sell them when they are in the upper quartile of that range. The firm looks for stocks that are trading for a meaningful discount to our estimate of present value. They ask what a company might be worth to a strategic or financial buyer, based on recent transactions. SMC also looks for those instances when temporary concerns drive the market value of a company below the value of its reported net assets. SCM searches for businesses that they expect to increase in value relatively swiftly, due either to secular or cyclical influences, but whose stocks appear to reflect a more restrained outlook. They compare a company's PEG ratio, and are attracted to stocks whose PEG ratios are at or near the lower end of their historic ranges. While the firm's portfolios typically emphasize larger capitalization issues, they believe that investment opportunities are not limited by a company's size. Upon completion of analysis, SCM establishes a price objective for the stock, above which they intend to sell the entire position, all else being equal. This target is based on one or more specific valuation measures. They also pay heed to the sector concentration of the portfolio as a whole when weighing the size of an individual position, and how that concentration compares to the S&P 500. They may substantially overweight sectors that appear particularly undervalued, and have no exposure to sectors they judge unattractive. SCM's value discipline mandates that they reduce or eliminate positions when a stock's price exceeds our estimate of the issuer's fair value, even if the firm has owned the stock for a relatively short period of time. They establish price objectives for each position within their portfolio based on valuation measures specific to each stock, and adjust those prices up or down over time as fundamentals warrant. | Portfolio Manager-Equities | 2008-08-02 |
