On Wednesday Texas Instruments announced its intention to invest over $60bn in expanding its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in the United States.

The chipmaker said the projects, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Trump administration, are aimed at meeting growing demand in sectors such as automotive, mobile phones and data centers.

The Dallas-based group, founded nearly a century ago, said its SM1 plant in Sherman, Texas, is set to begin production this year, just three years after construction began.

The SM2 facility, the site's second production unit, has also been completed.

In Richardson, Texas, the group, which supplies customers such as Apple, Ford, Nvidia, and SpaceX, emphasizes that the RFAB2 site continues to ramp up.

In Lehi, Utah, TI says it is stepping up the ramp-up of LFAB1, its first 300 mm wafer fab at the site. Construction of 'LFAB2', which will be connected to LFAB1, is also progressing.

Together, the mega-sites in Sherman, Richardson and Lehi are expected to eventually support more than 60,000 jobs in the US.
