Stellantis N.V. : Luca Maestri (Apple) tipped to succeed Carlos Tavares at Stellantis
John Elkann, Chairman of Stellantis, has already chosen the successor to Carlos Tavares, the company's current CEO. According to information obtained by Corriere della Sera, the post is likely to go to Luca Maestri, an Italian man with an impressive track record. Currently vice-president and CFO of Apple, Maestri is expected to head the automaker in early 2025, after the end of his notice period with the Californian firm, the publication understands.
Born in Rome in 1963, Luca Maestri holds a degree in economics from the Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome and a master's degree in management from Boston University. After starting his career by leaving Italy at the age of 26, he rose through the ranks at General Motors, where he held strategic positions in Europe and Latin America. In particular, he oversaw the joint venture with Fiat. Maestri went on to join Nokia Siemens Networks, then Xerox, before moving to Apple in 2013. As CFO of the group, he became one of the pillars of management in the Tim Cook era.
An atypical profile
Luca Maestri is also known for his humility and practicality, qualities he attributes to his difficult start in the business world. As Corriere points out, at a conference organized by his university in Rome, he recounted how he started out at General Motors without mastering English, while stressing that "the most important thing is to have the opportunity to learn directly on the job, especially from one's mistakes".
Maestri would undoubtedly be a good choice for Stellantis, as he would be a "game changer" capable of rekindling financial interest in the project. With his dual automotive/technology credentials, he would represent a major asset for the ailing manufacturer.
