Nokia announces that Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), the largest municipal utility in the United States, has selected it to install a standalone 5G private network. This project will support the modernization of the electric grid in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee, with the goal of reducing the impact of outages and speeding up service restoration for 420,000 customers.

MLGW becomes the first US municipal utility to adopt such a network. Nokia's solution, including AirScale equipment, 5G core network, microwave backhaul and NetGuard cybersecurity, will improve connectivity, resilience and operational efficiency.

Doug McGowen, CEO of MLGW, said that this will enable fast and reliable communication to automate and better control the network.
