On a per-share basis, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company said it had profit of 55 cents.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 78 cents per share.

The biotechnology company posted revenue of $2.81 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Ten analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.55 billion.

For the year, the company reported a loss of $4.71 billion, or $12.33 per share. Revenue was reported as $6.85 billion.
