Merck's animal health division received Food and Drug Administration approval for its once-yearly injectable flea-and-tick treatment for dogs.

Merck Animal Health said Thursday it expects its Bravecto Quantum treatment to be available in veterinary clinics by August.

The treatment first gained approval in Australia and New Zealand two years ago, followed by the European Union last year.

It kills adult fleas, prevents flea infestations and treats and controls tick infestations, the company said. Its effects last for 12 months in adult dogs and six months in puppies.
