MUNICH (dpa-AFX) - Despite the ongoing economic crisis, Munich Airport is reporting strong growth in passenger and flight numbers. In 2024, 41.6 million passengers used Germany's second-largest airport, four and a half million more than in 2023. The number of takeoffs and landings increased by eight percent to over 327,000, according to the airport company FMG.
According to FMG, the growth was mainly due to international air traffic: flights within Europe and to Mediterranean destinations increased by 12 percent, and long-haul traffic by 17 percent. "This confirms that there is strong demand for air travel and underscores the importance of the Munich hub for the economy and population of the Free State of Bavaria and far beyond," said airport CEO Jost Lammers.
In the economic surveys conducted by the Ifo Institute, travel agencies and tour operators were among the few optimistic sectors of the economy in recent months, as interest in foreign and long-haul travel has increased again following the end of the coronavirus pandemic./cho/DP/men
