Russia launched its biggest aerial assault of the year on Ukraine, ending a pause on strikes on Ukraine's energy systems and dealing another blow to the country during some of the winter's coldest days.

President Trump had said in recent days that he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold off on strikes for a week because of the frigid temperatures. Russia had continued its nightly barrages on Ukraine-including strikes on transportation infrastructure-but Moscow appeared to refrain for several days from direct assaults on energy.
