OTTAWA--Canada is eyeing potential tariffs on up to $150 billion of U.S. products as a possible response in a trade row with Washington, according to an official in Ottawa.

The $150 billion of targeted imports is an initial list and subject to change, depending on what President-elect Donald Trump does soon after he's inaugurated, said the official. The official did not disclose the specific goods being considered.

Trump has threatened to slap a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada, citing lackluster border security and the trade deficit that the U.S. runs with its northern neighbor. Trump has also said he's ready to use economic force to compel Canada to join America as its 51st state.

The $150 billion tariff list was earlier reported by The Toronto Star. According to Census Bureau data, the U.S. sold $322 billion worth of goods in 2024 with December data still pending.
