The Land and Environment Court has upheld steel producer SSAB's permit to construct and operate a new steel plant in Luleå, according to a press release.
This decision follows an appeal of the permit, which was originally granted in December last year and subsequently led to a review being approved. The court has now ruled on the matter, basing its decision on written submissions from the involved parties.
"We welcome the fact that the Land and Environment Court has now resolved the outstanding issues related to the permit for our new steel plant in Luleå. Eliminating uncertainties provides clarity and stability for our transformation. With the new steel plant, we will achieve a better cost position, a more attractive product mix with premium steel, and increased flexibility to manage fluctuations in demand," said Carl Orrling, EVP, Technical Director, and Head of the Transformation Office at SSAB.
SSAB's objective is to replace its current blast furnace-based production with a new electric arc steel mill. This is a major initiative, with an investment of 50 billion kronor--an amount not far below the company's market capitalization.
