The Australian government has partnered with Ampol, IOR and Viva Energy to acquire three import cargoes of diesel amounting to 150 million liters, bringing the total purchased under the Strategic Reserve Bill to 600 million L, according to a news release by the Ministry for Climate Change and Energy on Friday.
These volumes will be distributed across South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria.
The origins and delivery periods for the latest three shipments were not disclosed.
In addition to the 600 million L of diesel, Canberra has purchased around 100 million L of jet fuel under the Strategic Reserve Bill, bringing the total number of cargoes of diesel and aviation fuel purchased thus far to 14.
Australia imported around 19.9 million bbl of diesel and jet fuel in April, slightly higher than the 19.4 million bbl delivered in March and 19.7 million bbl delivered in February before the Middle East conflict started, according to data provider Vortexa.
The country is expected to take delivery of around 22.5 million bbl of diesel and jet fuel in May, the highest level seen since September 2025, when 24.3 million bbl was delivered.
Australia has 3.30 billion L of diesel held under the government's minimum stockholding obligations as of May 5, equivalent to 35 days of normal consumption, according to an update posted on Saturday by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
